deviance...justified or not...(...)

 deviance: breaking a socil rule, or refusing to follow one...now we all are guilty of acking in deviant manners on/in many levels of our life even if the ack of deviance was small and doesnt seem like it effected anything...now crime is an act law makers considers bad enough to warrant, jounal, sanction...now their is something connecting these two things that alot of people might not understand on the first go around...the art of power both deviance and crime are a reaction to something a norm a value or even a belief someone might have, but all of this stemmed off of a certain locus this ties into the issue of conformty and social control theses means acceptable behavior that vary by culture etc... but sometimes these might not be direct reactions to a law/rule but a reaction to who has the right to make things acceptable...movements in history prove forms of deviance and the law has either been used to accept this deviance and try to acknowledge and change wrong doings or label it as crime and take reprocussions recreating this power struggle some of theses actions were going agaisnt in the first place...some examples of this may be the black panthers, civil rights movement, occupy wall street, even the movements in the "arab spring"... so are all forms of deviance evil or are some justifyied ??

Socialization

we are all socialized in different ways, and different aspects of our life effect the way this process occurs, many people believe different theory's set up the framework for how the socialization process occurs but most of them are western minded and don't take into account different ways kids grow up even here in america and around the world they also don't take into account class, race, and gender witch are key components into the way the socialization process happens, and continues to happen throughout your life.

so i watched these two videos. The first one was called "killing us softly" Jean Kilbourne explains that advertising creates this sense of dehuminzation and struggle in a woman's life, it creates this ideal picture that is impossible to obtain. advertisement is used to sell products but it influences out morals, values, and taught process, if we know it or not...its a scheme called target advertising their talking about you, or a person you believe is in your same situation and you start to believe what the add is saying...kilbourne explains this is seen in young teenage/adult woman who continue to try and meet this perfect look because add's are saying or portraying them as to fat, breast to little, but to small, etc...the part that stuck out to me was when she explained that advertisement create this idea of passivity and turn woman into objects. she shows examples of woman being labeled as alcohol bottles, and then she shows a variety of add's with woman and their hands on their mouth and covered up faces with words that portrayed them as just another thing, as gold diggers, one add with an African american woman said she should be "Barely their"...and these things go to show that woman are socialized in a different way threw forms of pop culture and media and it disproves some theory's that talk about were socialized at a young age because this is a process witch goes on forever.

now kilbourne also says their are some stereotypes that effect men but it doesn't attack their body like it does woman...in my mind this creates the ideas of feminine and masculine in society and create theses ideas into norms...tony porter explains in a ted talk session what his experience of being socialized as a man was and how he experienced it threw his "man box" he explains how society creates this idea around men as being superior, but also violent, and demanding...that men should see woman as property and not a person he explains a situation when he was a child and lied about having sex with a female because his man card was in jeopardy he understood and felt bad for what he had just done but it stirred thoughts in his mind about society and how its formulated from a mans perspective...he says we should reconceptualize what it is to be a man the way we act and also raise our children to stop things like men violence against woman witch he says is at epidemic all times high...one thing that stood out that he said was "my liberation as a man is tied to your liberation as a woman" and that is a proper form of socialization in my eyes... <(^^)>...(...)

       

society

i believe society is made up by the role's complicit within it and who are allowed to preform these roles. all social institutions and structures are formed because of someone holding a subordinate role and superordinate role...in our society and the world today and threw history their has been many movements trying to change the ideology's behind how roles are preformed...Paulo Freire explains in his book pedagogy of the oppressed that the oppressed to be liberated need to engage in a sort of dialogue they must be at the forefront of the art of liberation but he also says that the oppressor must realize his similarity to those who are oppressed for true change to emerge...this identity of oppressed and oppressor is shown within roles that are played in society even though Freire in his book gives an example of student-teacher it doesn't stop at things like child-parent he sets up this metaphor that criticizes the framework in witch society is set...the metaphor is seen in politics movements like occupy wall street have arisen in direct opposition to capitalism within america they are attacking the foundation in witch roles are set...even though the movement isn't clear with their motives a role change is pertinent within their needs/wants they would love for the 1% and 99% not to switch places but to become complicit with oppression that capitalism causes not only to us but around the world...that is just one example of how role effect society on a level of universality and globalization because capitalism is every were not saying that is the only "ism" that causes violence but it is something that people around the world critic and try to "break down" and most of the demand/needs of the people who do it are based on role performance  within the social institutions and structures that continue complicity with a system that may or may not cause harm to people...

cultural outlook

     


culture...the idea's and belief's that individuals develop about the world...being from Dominican republic one norm/element of my culture that i grew up with was every morning saying "suong mami" or "suong papi" (don't know if i spelled it correctly lol)... that is a form of "non-material" culture witch are the ideas and belief that people develop about their lives and world that differs from material culture witch are physical things people make and use in the physical environment they inhabitant an example of that may be the current culture of the u.s. is technology i.e. everyone has laptops, and cell phones and are on Facebook most of the time... the other elements that make up culture along with norms are material culture, symbols, language, ritual's, and value's now even though person's may be from the same area they and may share some of the same aspects of culture human experience differs from every individual...within cultures their are sub cultures and counter cultures both of these allow for culture as an entity of itself to become diverse in a lot of different aspects but this may backlash if it causes culture shock...their are a lot of subsets within culture that can be determined by the elements some things that fall into these categories are found in the first picture...me being Dominican a cuisine that my country eats a lot is fried plantains and sometimes my mother mashes them and makes something called "mangu"...dance/music is another thing that may Dominicans and other native Spanish countries coin as a big developer of their culture from reggaeton to salsa and bachata their are also many festivals and fun street life in parts of the Dominican republic that express some what of a national culture their...the second picture takes more of a societal view of how culture effects the individual it put the "paradigm" or way of thinking at the center of the equation and then allows for the viewing of how that affects not only culture i.e. rituals/routines and stories but also control systems and power structures...

i leave you with this how does your culture shape your reality?? what outlook does that give you on society?? and do you think it may cloud you from the chaos/order dichotomy that society holds itself to...

international "relations"

i learned about this in 2007 when my high school debate topic was how should the united states federal government increase its aid to Africa (most affirmatives speaking about how we should solve or increase u.s. A.I.D. to try and solve the child soldiers problem

glad to see people taking a interest in international "relations" even though the u.s. isn't really trying to get involved

KONY 2012!!!! (great movement, with a great cause...sometimes i'am not hopefully in social movements like this maybe because i see a lot of chaos within our current society and the different society's of the world but my  sociological imagination allows me to see both chaos and the ability for order in situations of this caliber)

Who am I? O.o

    what makes up my person is my mentality i feel as if the way i see things shapes my outlook on the world...i see things in a weird way where everything has to link to something else even if sometimes it seems illogical i try and connect everything that goes on to another "intersection" of life i wouldn't say i always look at things threw this lens but i try to usually its more individual but when i engage in conversation it may become societal or in/with certain groups and places i interact with in my life, i also feel as if my personality makes me as well i try not to be shy and express my self in different outlets...


some influences i have in my life are my parents because they seem happy and when i get older i would like to feel the same way, another influence is education i feel as if i'am always learning and feel the urge to get taught more and more because the deeper my horizon is the better i can understand is one of my favorite quotes by a author i read called paulo friere is "education either functions as a tool of conformity, or it becomes a practice of liberation" and i feel as it education can liberate me from most "shackles" of limitations i'am faced with and education doesn't stop nor begin only in a class room...


some of the goals i have in life are to become a history teacher and move on to law school to become a lawyer while i coach a high school or college policy debate team...


some purposes i believe i have in life are to take care of my mom when she cant do it for herself, to get my education, and to strive/achieve happiness and success as i see fit...
