beyond black and white (article #1)
this article was speaking from a perspective i thought it would when i choose it in class...the article "beyond black and white: remaking race in america" speaks about before and after the year 2000 census...after the year 2000 census familys had the ability to label their child as more than one race that posits a problem with the census's that came before what would a black father and white mother or Asian, or Hispanic mother and white father label their child as at this point, they would have to choose one either black or white....their are two founding ideas in this article "why does this matter" and "what does it do"... before this article i diddnt really understand why it matters after reading i learned it matters because it helps check back forms of institutional racism after sociologist and other political theorist can see what race's in america receive what benefits witch leads into the internal link of helping legislation and giving matters of race a forefront in politics thats one of the main reasons why this happened and matters in society now as you hear potential candidates talking about issues that not only interest them but "the people"...now the question of "what does it do" came to me not only from the article but from my debate team back~round choosing this article to read i had an idea of what it was going to speak about and it did...the huge thing this does to race in america and why it remakes it not only in politics but on a socio-economic level is it breaks down what is called this "black white paradigm" were we posit blackness vs whiteness or black and white as the only race's in america this is one reason why it is key in politics but also why it is key to increase awareness of multicultural practices in the united states and how the dominate culture is not white and the "other" or lower is not black...it is a really deep concept and the breaking of this concept is key to breaking down racial injustice in america and allowing culture to seep into our every day lives and not be hidden in stereotypes or labels we allow society to give us....<(^^)>
